Best Handgun for Hunting

Aug 25 2008

Whenever you get in a group of more than one person with a handgun, the talk will eventually turn to a discussion of, What is the Best Handgun for Hunting ?

Well that’s easy, it’s the Smith and Wesson Model 29, and the Colt Python, and the Ruger Redhawk, and and the Ruger Blackhawk, and (insert favorite handgun here.)

It’s like Ford and Chevy. Your favorite is the one that you own most likely. Ol’ Squeeze has owned all of the above (and maybe one or two more even,) and now that he squints a little more than he used to has settled on the Smith and Wesson Model 29 in .44 Magnum.

To me it has always been a top performer. I like the double-action pull for some reason, though I don’t think I have ever used the straight trigger pull from the get go. It just seems natural to cock that baby back when ready. So there is no reason at all to have a double, it has just become a habit and personal choice. There are a ton of very nice single-action revolvers out there and I am not putting any of them down, no sir.

Here’s what it boils down to in the discussion of Best Handgun. A revolver, hands down winner. Now don’t get me wrong I own several 1911 .45 ACPs and love each and every one of them, but for hunting, the best handgun is a revolver.

Revolvers are relatively simple, rugged, fewer tricky moving parts, and they work good in all elements of weather or mud. Semi-autos can be a little temperamental at times. A well cared for semi-auto can be dependable also, but if you haven’t cleaned it in a coons age or it has dried out, or gotten full of mud and grit, it just might go “click.” I’ve had it happen and unless that ol’ buck is within wrasslin’ range, he’s gone.

So those are the thoughts of an old timer. What do you think?
