If you are over 40 years old and have been using a handgun for a while, you will notice that a pistol scope is needed.

Now I am older than 40 (a lot older,) and have enjoyed handgun shooting and handgun hunting since I was 21 years old.

I’m not going to pat my back too hard because the bones are starting to get easier to break, but I want to tell you I was damned good at shootin’ !

I was an A-Class shooter in IPSC, and in Bullsey, not so much.
My IPSC days were some of the most fun I have ever had out of life, hands down, bar none. The International Practical Shooters Confederation, IPSC, is a fancy name for a group of seriously dedicated shooters worldwide that concentrate on defensive handgun shooting.

In New York State I used to travel around to a great many locations and each course was set up different. When you are young, healthy and in good shape, there is nothing more exhilarating than moving from station to station, target to target, climbing over obstacles, jumping across ditches, crawling through tunnels, swinging on ropes, and all with the goal of getting all the way through the course using Speed, Power and Accuracy.

The main object was to be very fast though the course, but also to make sure you got all of your rounds on the targets. The scoring was a complicated procedure of a variable of your time and hit score. The prizes were a trophy and bragging rights.

The only way to get good in that game was to practice, practice, practice. The Colt 1911 .45 ACP was my weapon of choice and when I moved up in class I got so that I was shooting an average of 400 rounds a day! Of course that meant reloading every night, but oh well.

When the eyes were good, open sights were not a problem. When you shoot a lot like that it becomes second nature for the 45 to line up perfectly every time and you don’t even think about it as your eyes instinctively focus on the front and the rear sight at the same gazillionth of an instant and the round is let go.

I no longer compete. That’s a young mans game, but no one can take away my fond memories. Today’s foray afield is almost always in search of the Whitetail Deer. Now the instinct is gone, and there is no way I can ever focus on both the front and the back of open sights at the same time. I can barely focus on one or the other of them and still keep the deer in the mental picture.

So I have let common sense prevail and have mounted a pistol scope on all of my hunting handguns. I have tried several different types of cross-hairs and magnification and have settled on Red Dots for all of them, with no magnification.

I don’t have any problem seeing a far distance, so when you think about centering the kill zone in the glass of the pistol scope, and then wherever the red dot is, that is where the bullet is going to go. It’s almost Laser like and as long as you remember to squeeze the trigger slowly and to not jerk the pistol, you are going to get your buck.

That’s where my friend Dan came to the rescue. EdgeCustom.com makes some unique products for the handgun hunter. I use the Utra-Stealth Handgun Hunting Holster to carry my S&W Model 29 in .44 Magnum, and it is the “fastest” speed draw rig ever made. I have told you about the holster before.

Today I want to make sure you know about the other products that Edge Custom manufactures. Their line of non-gunsmithing scope mounts is superior to any that I have ever found. The scope mounts are engineered such as to take advantage of certain nubs and existing holes on certain model revolvers.

There is no drilling and tapping required to mount the scope of your choice on your handgun. They make specific mounts for Ruger Blackhawk, Ruger Redhawk, and some other specific revolver manufacturers. The mounts are very strong and they will never shoot loose. (Check their website.)

They also make a kick-ass product for the Colt 1911 .45 ACP. It is a scope mount that is machined out of Delrin and it replaces the left-had grip. The Delrin sticks up and is centered above the slide and your scope will not interfere with the action or ejection.

Using a pistol scope is almost like cheating. The first year I hunted with a Red Dot I dropped an eight pointer with one shot at 160 yards with the ol’ 44.

You will want to visit the website of EdgeCustom and also make sure you go to the Edge Custom Blog also.

Then go bag a buck.

Ol’ Squeeze gets asked from time to time to talk about products for hunting that are not necessarily gun related and this is the case with Ultra Compact Binoculars.

Hunting with Ultra Compact Binoculars has become a real pleasure in recent years because optics and manufacturing just keeps getting better and better. No longer do you have five pounds of weight on a strap that is digging into the back of your neck. You can get the job done with Ultra Compact Binoculars.

We can recommend any of these Ultra Compact Binoculars at great discounts through an arrangement that we have with Amazon. You will get excellent service and the best prices with amazon and they are a first rate company.

You also can check out our main sponsor, Bass Pro Shops, by clicking on their logo at the bottom right of this Blog.

Binoculars have become more and more popular over recent years, having many uses in a range of outdoor recreational activities and pursuits. If you are going hunting, camping, hiking, fishing or sailing, a pair of binoculars can add a new dimension and in some cases could be an essential piece of equipment. But could ultra compact binoculars do the same thing for our everyday lives?

Only a few years ago, it would have seemed ridiculous to suggest that we wouldn’t consider leaving the house without taking a phone with us. And yet now, carrying a cellular phone has become the norm and it seems strange not to have one. They seem to grow in sophistication on an almost weekly basis, with improved cameras, music players and software. What was once a toy for the techno geek is now mainstream.

Binocular technology has also advanced, particularly in the area of compact binoculars. Some of the models that are available now look very different from the larger, more traditional designs. They look modern, sleek, stylish and very, very small. The newer ultra compact binoculars would easily fit into a purse or shirt pocket and are just as easy to carry around as the ubiquitous cell phone.

Small size doesn’t equate to low quality though. It is now possible to get very good optics and quite high magnification in a very small package. They won’t break the bank either with prices comparing very favorably with some of the other technology that we carry around. So what use would we city dwellers make of these shiny new devices?

There are obvious uses such as at sports events such as football games, horse racing or track and field. But what about indoor sports like basketball or ice hockey. There is also the theatre, ballet and opera. These modern devices are just as unobtrusive to carry around, and of far better quality than traditional opera glasses.

These devices are not just for viewing objects at great distances. They can also have a very short minimum focusing range, enabling you to better appreciate the detail on object that is quite close. From taking a closer look at the ornate carving on the walls of a building, to picking out the finer points of a painting or sculpture in a gallery, compact binoculars can enhance your viewing pleasure.

And, let’s be honest, it’s not all about the pursuit of culture, binoculars can just be fun. Who doesn’t like to people watch from time to time? When you leave the gallery, you can find a pavement café, drink a coffee and watch the world go by. And if something interesting seems to be happening on the other side of the square, you can zoom in for a closer look. Go on, you know you want to.

We have become accustomed to being able to carry our entertainment around with us. With developments in ultra compact binocular technology opening up new possibilities for fun on the move, could they become the latest ‘must have’ accessory? They are certainly available at prices to suit most budgets without stinting on quality. Will you be ahead of the trend?

You can find more information about binoculars and particularly Ultra Compact Binoculars at http://www.bynocular.com.

Note: This should be of interest to you readers. When a post is written on this site the advertisements are supposed to reflect and represent the subject matter. You gun owners will not be surprised to realize that though this post was entirely about “binoculars” and “Ultra Compact Binoculars” specifically, not one of the ads that I have been monitoring since this post was written show anything at all to do with binoculars. All of the ads seem to be related to personal security products. Ol’ Squeeze does have a buddy in the personal security products business and you will want to visit his website at Personal Security Products.

Normally Ol’ Squeeze here is going to be telling you about hunting situations, but as you can tell by this website’s sections I am very interested in and a supporter of the Second Ammendment Foundation (SAF) and the National Rifle Association (NRA.)

This news story came across my computer this morning and I just wanted to share it with you.

When the debate over the carrying of concealed weapons raged in Kansas, critics warned that violence would ensue and that more children would die in accidental shootings because of ready access to handguns carried by a parent.

According to state authorities, neither has happened.

Since January 2007, more than 15,000 Kansans have become concealed carry permit holders, and, according to the Attorney General’s Office, not a single one has committed a crime using a handgun.

“I’m not aware of any incidents in which a concealed carry permit holder used a handgun in the commission of a crime,” said Chuck Sexson, director of the Attorney General’s Concealed Carry Unit.

The article was first called to my attention here:

Just goes to show, good people, obeying the laws and having every right to carry a handgun.

Whenever you get in a group of more than one person with a handgun, the talk will eventually turn to a discussion of, What is the Best Handgun for Hunting ?

Well that’s easy, it’s the Smith and Wesson Model 29, and the Colt Python, and the Ruger Redhawk, and and the Ruger Blackhawk, and (insert favorite handgun here.)

It’s like Ford and Chevy. Your favorite is the one that you own most likely. Ol’ Squeeze has owned all of the above (and maybe one or two more even,) and now that he squints a little more than he used to has settled on the Smith and Wesson Model 29 in .44 Magnum.

To me it has always been a top performer. I like the double-action pull for some reason, though I don’t think I have ever used the straight trigger pull from the get go. It just seems natural to cock that baby back when ready. So there is no reason at all to have a double, it has just become a habit and personal choice. There are a ton of very nice single-action revolvers out there and I am not putting any of them down, no sir.

Here’s what it boils down to in the discussion of Best Handgun. A revolver, hands down winner. Now don’t get me wrong I own several 1911 .45 ACPs and love each and every one of them, but for hunting, the best handgun is a revolver.

Revolvers are relatively simple, rugged, fewer tricky moving parts, and they work good in all elements of weather or mud. Semi-autos can be a little temperamental at times. A well cared for semi-auto can be dependable also, but if you haven’t cleaned it in a coons age or it has dried out, or gotten full of mud and grit, it just might go “click.” I’ve had it happen and unless that ol’ buck is within wrasslin’ range, he’s gone.

So those are the thoughts of an old timer. What do you think?

Leave your comments on what you think is the Best Handgun.

Welcome fellow hunting enthusiasts.

In case you haven’t guessed yet, we’re pretty new to the Internet.

They call me Squeeze and you can take that any way you want, but it is meant to be as in “the trigger.”

Ol’ Squeeze is not new to gunning, that’s for sure. Been shotgun, rifle, handgun and bow hunting for over 40 years. Dad and his cronies used to haul me along in the woods long before I could carry anything bigger than a rattle. I always thought that I was hot stuff, but in later years discovered that they really wanted to have me walk though the cedar swamps.

Throughout all of life’s accomplishments and defeats, no matter what, all of those situations are forgotten once you are in the woods or afield. Hunting is just about the very best remedy for what ails ya that I can think of.

My favorite is whitetail hunting and where we are located in the heart of Upstate New York is God’s Deer Country, there is no doubt. Our property is about a quarter mile up a hill that I like to call Walton’s Mountain and all we see is woods, hills and open sky. We are surrounded by several miles of State Forest land and I don’t ever want to leave.

We would like to hear from readers. This website will be as inter-active as you would like. Please consider posting comments about some of your favorite hunts, your equipment, your likes and dislikes, just about anything you want.

This is a family site and we do moderate the comments, but unless you are blatantly insulting or a stupid idiot, your comments will most likely get posted and responded to.

Thanks for visiting HuntingWith.com and do come back. We should have lots of new things to read on your return.

We also encourage anyone to guest post any good articles that you are the author of and want to share with our readers.

My contact information is on the Privacy Policy page. We don’t post it all over in the actual email format, but you will be able to figure it out, much better that the computer spamming robots will. We hope.

Squeeze

Landmark Ruling: U.S. Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Americans to have handguns in their homes for protection. June 27, 2008.

The Supreme Court, splitting along ideological lines, today declared that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own guns for self-defense. This ruling strikes down the District of Columbia’s ban on handgun ownership as unconstitutional.

The 5 to 4 decision, written by Justice Antonin Scalia represented a monumental change in federal jurisprudence.

It said that the government may impose some restrictions on gun ownership, but that the District of Columbia’s toughest rules in the nation ban went too far.

Scalia wrote that the Constitution leaves the District a number of options for combating the problem of handgun violence, “including some measures regulating handguns.”

“But the enshrinement of constitutional rights necessarily takes certain policy choices off the table,” he continued. “These include the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home.”

Scalia was joined by the most consistently conservative justices — Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., Anthony M. Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr.

Justices John Paul Stevens, David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Stephen G. Breyer voted against the ruling.

The court also held unconstitutional the requirement that shotguns and rifles be kept disassembled or unloaded or outfitted with a trigger lock. The court called it a “prohibition against rendering any lawful
firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense.”

Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the presumptive Republican presidential nominee quickly put out a statement endorsing the decision, calling it a “landmark victory” for Second Amendment rights. “Today’s ruling . . .
makes clear that other municipalities like Chicago that have banned handguns have infringed on the constitutional rights of Americans,” McCain said.

Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), the Democrats’ all but certain nominee, also issued a statement saying that “I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures.
